This book provides a solid, quantitative and practical introduction to a wide range of renewable energy systems. For each topic, theoretical background is presented, practical engineering considerations associated with designing systems and forecasting their performance, and methods for assessing the economics of these systems are presented.
While more attention is being paid to the fastest and most promising technologies of wind and solar energy, the course I teach at Stanford University, for example, has no prerequisites. About half of the students are undergraduate and the other half are graduate students. Almost all of them are from the departments of engineering and natural sciences, with an increasing number of business students. The book is designed to encourage self-education by providing many examples fully-worked throughout. Almost every topic that lends itself to quantitative analysis is illustrated with such examples. Each class ends with a set of problems that provides additional practice for the student, and which should also facilitate homework preparation by the teacher.
The book also introduces tidal and wave technologies, geothermal, biomass, hydropower, and electricity storage technologies. Supply side and demand side technologies have been incorporated in the final chapter, which introduces the upcoming smart grid. The book is intended for a mixed audience of engineers and other tech-savvy individuals.
This new edition has been completely rewritten, updated and reorganized. A great deal of new material is being introduced, either in the form of new topics or greater depth in some areas. New topics include wave and tidal energy, pumped storage, smart grid, and geothermal energy.
